About
Oriel and Ball

A Short History of Oriel College

Oriel College, founded in 1326, is the oldest royal foundation in Oxford. It was established by King Edward II with the official name of "The Provost and Scholars of the House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford, commonly called Oriel College, of the Foundation of Edward the Second of famous memory, sometime King of England". The name “Oriel” came later, from a property known as La Oriole, given to the college around 1329.

Throughout its history, Oriel gained a reputation for intellectual and political influence. In the 19th century, it became the centre of the Oxford Movement, a major theological and intellectual movement within the Church of England, led by figures such as John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey, both Oriel fellows.

Historically small and traditional, Oriel has evolved significantly, admitting women in 1985 and expanding its academic and social life. Today, it is known for its tight-knit community, glorious rowing tradition, and historic buildings centred around its iconic Front Quad. This year, we celebrate 700 years of heritage and Orielenses.

Oriel College Commemoration Balls

A Commemoration Ball is one of Oxford’s most prestigious and traditional celebrations, held by colleges at the end of Trinity Term, usually every three years. These are all-night, white-tie events featuring themed décor, live music, unlimited food and drink, and entertainment ranging from jazz bands to fairground rides. Rooted in Oxford’s historic Commemoration of Benefactors, the balls bring together students, alumni, and guests for a final, extravagant celebration before the summer break. They are known for their grandeur, formality, and a distinctly blend of history and revelry.
